"Ideas" Primary survey

I just checked the mail and behold I just got a survey from the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.  They really want my input on the survey to help guide policy in the coming election season.  The trouble is that when it comes to politics every word in a statement needs to be given scrutiny five times over to make sure you know the meaning before you agree to it.  As such this "survey" is mostly a questionnaire on "How much do you agree with the policy positions we have already decided on?"

Noticeably absent from the survey is any mention of a Green New Deal, reforms to student loan programs and higher education to make it all more affordable, or even the medicare for all program that Bernie Sanders championed and some of the other prospective candidates for the 2020 Presidential election have supported.  This survey is more of a confirmation letter that the Democratic Party still isn't listening.

I can appreciate that the Trump administration has rallied the base and caused moderates to swing more towards the Democratic Party but making half of the "survey" questions about how much do you hate Trump's policies it makes the whole thing feel negative.  Hillary ran her campaign on a tactic of negativity towards Trump and how scary his Presidency would be and she lost.  (Trump sort of did the same thing keeping it negative against Hillary but Republicans respond to fear and hatred more than Democrats do.)

In the mean time I want to talk about what each candidate has in mind for a Green New Deal and how they would get it past and implement it.  (I tend to think that most of a Green New Deal should be done at the State level and all the Federal Government should do is change how their energy subsidy programs work, right now they favor fossil fuels and tilt the market in favor of coal, gas and oil.)

I want to hear what ideas there are for improving the Affordable Care Act.  I want to know what medicare for all would do because the financial structure of our healthcare system would change drastically if that happened and the short term transition would likely be a mess.

I want information on what they plan to do about the Dreamers act.  It seems like it should be as simple as saying, "If you can prove that you have lived continuously in the United States since Primary School and have a clean arrest record you are eligible for Amnesty, if you have an arrest record you can file an appeal for review.

Something that is a little more important to me than other people but which I would really like to know about...  I want to hear what the position is on funding science, engineering, and technology research in this country.  When I was a teenager we lead the world in funding science research but since Bush's cutting of funding for environmental research and pushing a more faith based approach and now Trump's attacks on science....  We should all be concerned about this.

American Pride: The memoir of a future President, Part 3 The trouble with tribal

"I haven't decided if I want to be a brain surgeon or a short order fry cook." I use to hear this growing up from my grandparents, it was from the show The Beverly Hillbillies, but it was accurate to my teenage years. I learned and played the Trombone, loved the Trombone, kept playing it in college for any group that thought I was good enough to join. I also loved engineering.  There was something about taking the abstract concepts of science and math and finding practical application.  I loved solving problems too. By the time I was in high school and people start asking what I wanted to do with my life, I very seriously said I wasn't sure if I want to be a Professional Engineer or a Jazz Trombonist.  I did both for as long as I could but only one of those was a tried and true career path.  It didn't stop me from minoring in jazz arrangement.  I even wrote a disco song for jazz ensemble that I called "We're Fabulous".  When your in the your late te...

Nikki Haley, needs to own the Bossy Female Leader trope

Nikki Haley needs to be more direct against Trump.  His followers like bluster and crassness and don’t appreciate dancing around the issue.  Attacking Trump directly is the only way to knock him down. I like her talking point about chaos following Trump but let’s be direct about it.  Chaos doesn’t follow him, he makes it.  But regardless of where the chaos comes from, a good leader is someone that people can rally around and break through the chaos and make their polices work. Donald Trump is a bad leader because he hasn’t done, doesn’t have the skills to do that and actually seems to prevent others in his leadership team from being able to do that. Stop vying for a spot in his cabinet if you lose and call it like it is.  He has no leadership skills.  And Nikki Haley needs to say it.  Regardless of where chaos comes from a good leader works through it and keeps his team focused.  We know Trump can’t run a cohesive team even when it really matters,...

Shrinking JC Penny?

A recent article on Motley Fool suggested JC Penny had a sq footage target for its stores that would shrink the store size down by 30K or more sq feet, on average.  The article also noted the challenges with that,  namely that all their locations are in malls where renovations and subleasing can get tricky and require the approval of the property managers. Instead of shrinking the stores down JC Penny should do more partnering with other retailers that have struggled to maintain presence in malls and compartmentalize areas of their stores in to their own units.  I.E. 20 years ago every mall had a toy store, usually it was Kay Bee Toys in recent years it was Toys R Us Express, but now most malls have no toy stores.  JC Penny has the cash to buy the Kay Bee Toys name, build a few cubicle walls in an area of the store near the Sephora display and the Jewlery and purses and bring toys back to the mall.  Make it a separate business unit to JC Penny but still contrib...
